EWAN LACHLAN CAMPBELL

Scottish Minister, Theological Scholar, and Defender of the Living Faith

1888–1976

Ewan Lachlan Campbell was born in Scotland in 1888, the only son of Sergeant Lachlan Campbell of the 91st Argyllshire Highlanders. His childhood was marked by profound loss when his father died while serving on India’s frontier in 1897. Left to raise her son alone, Ewan’s mother planted within him an unshakable faith, teaching him that Scripture was not merely to be studied—it was to be believed, obeyed, and lived.

At nineteen, Campbell answered the call to ministry. In 1907, he began a lifelong journey of preaching, prayer, theological study, and service to the Church. He possessed the mind of a scholar but the heart of a shepherd, refusing to separate intellectual discipline from the living presence and power of the Holy Ghost.

Campbell’s theology was deeply rooted in Scripture and shaped by the spiritual heritage of the British Isles. He drew strength from the reformational courage of John Knox, the missionary faith of Patrick, and the prayer-soaked legacy of Columba. Yet he was never content merely to admire the saints of earlier generations. He believed their fire must be carried forward and that every generation must encounter the living Christ for itself.

In 1914, at the age of twenty-six, Campbell published his first theological work. It marked the beginning of a distinguished literary legacy that would eventually include five books. His writings explored the necessity of prayer, the healing power of God, the work of the Holy Ghost, the authority of Scripture, and the spiritual foundations upon which individuals and nations must stand.

Campbell wrote with scholarly precision, pastoral tenderness, and prophetic conviction. He rejected a Christianity reduced to ritual, institution, or intellectual argument. For him, the Gospel was alive—the power of God entering human lives, awakening faith, healing the broken, and calling nations back to righteousness.

At the heart of Campbell’s message was one unwavering conviction: no nation can remain strong when it abandons the Lord. Governments may rise, empires may expand, and cultures may congratulate themselves on their progress, but without a spiritual foundation, their strength will eventually fail.

Ewan Lachlan Campbell departed this life in 1976, leaving behind more than a collection of books. He left a witness—a call to return to Scripture, recover the place of prayer, welcome the living presence of the Holy Ghost, and rebuild upon the eternal foundation of Jesus Christ.

Today, his words speak again to a generation standing at another crossroads. They remind us that truth does not grow old, genuine faith cannot remain passive, and the fire of God must never be permitted to die upon the altar.
